Implications on Ukraine’s EU Integration on Agricultural Markets and Policy discussed at 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists

Taras Gagalyuk was a panelist of the Organised Symposia on “Consequences of the Russian Invasion of Ukrainian for the World Agricultural Markets and the EU Food System: Current State and the Future Implications in the Context of Potential Accession of Ukraine to the EU” during the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists.

One of the points discussed by panelists during the Organised Symposia was the perspectives of the EU Integration of Ukrainian Agriculture.

The potential EU accession of Ukraine poses further challenges for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which may need significant reform to accommodate Ukraine's distinct agricultural structure, characterized by large farms and numerous smallholders. The CAP's current budget constraints necessitate discussions on reconfiguration to enhance efficiency and competitiveness while balancing sustainability goals outlined in the EU Green Deal. Ukraine's agricultural sector, known for its efficiency and minimal public support, could serve as a model for future CAP reforms. Additionally, Ukraine's grain exports primarily target the southern hemisphere, suggesting that it may complement rather than compete with the EU in global agricultural markets.
