Ukraine-Analyses on the consequences of the Russian war of aggression for Ukrainian agriculture

Two years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the current issue of Ukraine-Analysen looks at the impact on Ukrainian agriculture.

The issue of Ukraine-Analysen N 294 looks at the impact of the Russian invasion on Ukrainian agriculture.[IL1]

IAMO colleagues Alexander Mkrtchian and Daniel Müller analysed the losses of cultivated land on both sides of the front line using Sentinel-2 satellite images to estimate the extent of the abandoned farmland on both sides of the front line. The total loss of Ukrainian cultivated land (both abandoned and taken over by Russia) amounts to more than 60,000 km2, or 18 percent of Ukraine's total cultivated area in 2021. Relocation of the front line, the construction of fortifications, and significant damage to the infrastructure could lead to the abandonment of further cultivated areas, and agricultural production continues to decline.

Oleg Nivievskyi and Roman Neyter from the Kyiv School of Economics take stock of the financial consequences of the war-related damage and losses in the agricultural sector. The overall damage to Ukrainian agriculture (including damage to agricultural machinery and devices; storage areas; livestock, bees, fisheries, and aquaculture; perennial crops; stolen or lost resources and crop yields) one year after the start of the invasion was estimated at $8.7 billion. Additionally, authors give an idea of the scale of the reconstruction of this sustainably damaged sector, which the two authors estimate at 29.8 billion US dollars.

IAMO researchers Franziska Schaft and Taras Gagalyuk have guest-edited this issue.
